Orthodontic retainers in Chesterfield
Straighter, healthier smiles are possible with retention!
Wearing a retainer is often the final step in transforming your smile. Alizadeh & Schreiner Orthodontics offers dental retainers after any orthodontic treatment – even if we did not provide your initial orthodontic treatment such as braces or clear aligners.
Retainers typically need replacement every three to five years, which can cost $600 or more per set at other practices. At Alizadeh & Schreiner Orthodontics, our Lifetime Retainer Program allows you to enjoy free retainers for life — even if you move away. Your only cost is $800 now, plus the cost of future co-pays.
What are dental retainers for?
Whether you had braces, aligner trays, spacers or another orthodontic tool, straightening your teeth is a significant commitment of time and money. It makes sense that any patient would want to make sure their beautiful new smile lasts. However, your teeth can move back out of place over time — even after braces.
Wearing an orthodontic retainer is the best way to preserve your results. A retainer is a device that keeps your teeth in their new position. Your orthodontist will take a mold of your new smile and use it to create a retention device unique to your mouth.
Types of teeth retainers
At Alizadeh & Schreiner Orthodontics, we recognize that every patient is different. That’s why we offer three distinct retainer options. Our orthodontists will help you decide between our dental retainers:
Hawley
These retainers feature a hard plastic plate that connects to curved metal wires. The wires apply pressure to the inside of the teeth while the plate rests against the roof of the mouth. You’ll wear your Hawley retainer every night.
Essix
These are innovative low-profile retainers that fit into your mouth like an aligner tray or mouthguard. Their clear plastic construction allows Essix retainers to blend in with your teeth. You’ll wear your Essix retainer day and night for the first two or three months. After that, you’ll wear the retainer nightly.
Fixed
These are permanent retainers that you’ll wear for the rest of your life. Your orthodontist will bond a metal wire to the back of your teeth. With a fixed retainer, you can preserve your new smile without having to keep track of a removable piece.
How to care for your retainer
Retainer care differs depending on the type you have. However, one step remains consistent — you’ll want to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once, especially before and after wearing your retainer. Keeping your mouth clean will ensure your retainer stays in great shape.
Here’s how you can care for each type of retainer we provide:
- Hawley and Essix: Scrub with a soft toothbrush using cold water and either liquid soap or toothpaste.
- Fixed: Floss between your teeth and the metal wire.
