How does laser therapy help orthodontics?
Our doctors use laser therapy for dental hygiene and comfort in patients of all ages. We apply leading laser technology to reduce pain, make orthodontic treatments more effective, or remove cold sores and encourage new cell growth.
Laser therapy helps canker and cold sores in the following ways:
- It kills bacteria and stops the spread of infection at the site, reducing the chance of repeat breakouts.
- It provides immediate pain relief to help you move your mouth normally.
- It greatly lowers the risk of scarring, which can happen with cold sores on the lip.
- It completely heals the sore within a couple of days.
Dealing with cold sores and canker sores
A cold sore — also called a fever blister — is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1. This virus remains in the body and causes open sores on the lips, but they may appear on the tongue, the roof of the mouth and the gums. Trauma, stress, hormones, and the common cold can cause a cold sore to appear. They are highly contagious and can spread to noninfected people through shared utensils, kissing and indirect contact.
A canker sore is a round or oblong lesion inside the mouth, usually on the tongue, inner cheek, or lips. While the exact cause is unknown, some triggers include allergies, stress, hormone changes, infections and spicy foods. These sores are painful but not contagious and should go away independently.
What to expect
When you need laser cold sore treatment, you can contact our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. We work to get you in and minimize cold and canker sores as soon as they appear. The sooner you notice a cold sore coming, the quicker you can contact us so we can mitigate the symptoms.
Our doctors will run the laser over the cold or canker sore for a few minutes. This painless procedure works to remove the sore instantly and provide relief. You may feel a warm, tingling sensation by the end of treatment.
After we finish the laser treatment, you are free to go! You can enjoy instant relief and begin talking, chewing and living as you normally would, and the sore should be gone entirely within a couple of days. If the sores persist or you experience another breakout, you can contact our office for repeat treatments.
