While most children won’t need braces or clear aligners till they hit their pre-teen years, our younger kids can still benefit greatly from a trip to their orthodontist! Here are a few reasons to schedule your 7yr old’s appointment today:
How Does Early Treatment Help?
Most people think of orthodontists as helping patients straighten their teeth, but that’s not all orthodontists do. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to make sure your bite is right – that upper and lower teeth fit together like interlocking gears. In some cases, treatment may need to start when baby teeth are still around.
Some children require growth guidance of bones in the upper and lower jaws, so there’s enough room for permanent teeth. Timing this treatment during the right point of a child’s growth can be tricky, which is why it’s great to consult your orthodontist early on.
Why Age 7?
At around age 6, a child’s first permanent molars appear. This kicks off a lot of movement in the mouth – it is when baby teeth become loose to make room for new, permanent teeth. This makes that next year (right around age 7) a great time to check in with an ortho.
It can be difficult as a parent to know when our kids are experiencing normal growth, or when there may be underlying issues. Here are some clues you can watch for to indicate it’s time to make an appointment:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Trouble chewing or biting
- Speech difficulties
- Breathing through mouth
The good news is, if your orthodontist has an opportunity to address these issues early they can often be treated with easier and quicker treatment options. So if your child has celebrated their 7th birthday this year, schedule a complimentary consultation for kids now!
