Dealing With Cold Sores and Canker Sores
A cold sore — also called a fever blister — is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1. This virus remains in the body and causes open sores on the lips, but they may appear on the tongue, roof of the mouth and gums. Trauma, stress, hormones and the common cold can cause a cold sore to appear. They are highly contagious and can spread to noninfected people through shared utensils, kissing and indirect contact.
A canker sore is a round or oblong lesion that forms inside the mouth, usually on the tongue or inner cheek or lips. While the exact cause is unknown, some triggers include allergies, stress, hormone changes, infections and spicy foods. These sores are painful, but they are not contagious and should go away independently.
How Does Laser Therapy Help?
Our doctors use laser therapy for dental hygiene and comfort in patients of all ages. We apply leading laser technology to reduce pain, remove the sore and encourage new cell growth.
Laser therapy helps canker and cold sores in the following ways:
- It kills bacteria and stops the spread of infection at the site, reducing the chance of repeat breakouts.
- It provides immediate pain relief to help you move your mouth normally.
- It greatly lowers the risk of scarring, which can happen with cold sores on the lip.
- It completely heals the sore within a couple of days.

After we finish the laser treatment, you are free to go!
